SUNY Oswego employees are invited to lunchtime outdoor explorations at Rice Creek Field Station this September and October. On alternating Wednesdays, employees can enjoy paddling or trail walking with refreshments (schedule below). This event series is part of the Laker Thrive Series at SUNY Oswego.
For anyone who wants a quick break or is tight on time, these drop-in programs could be completed in 30 minutes. Those who are able can stay as long as desired. Family and friends are welcome!
Participants can check in at Rice Creek's front desk. Use of the Green Route Shuttle, which runs every half hour, is encouraged -- the 12 pm shuttle picks up at the MCC bus loop and stops at Rice Creek 11 minutes later. Return shuttles leave at 12:41 and 1:11 pm. Alternatively, participants can drive a personal vehicle and park near the building.

Canoe & Kayak FAQs
-
What if I've never kayaked or canoed before? No problem! We are happy to help you have a good first experience.
-
What should I wear? Wear shoes you don't mind getting a little bit wet. Even better, if you wear shoes you are comfortable wading in.
-
Can I fish? Rice Creek is a nature preserve – hunting and fish are not allowed. Thank you for respecting our policy.
-
Can I play music while kayaking or canoeing? To be respectful of wildlife and other people at Rice Creek, we ask that you avoid playing music. Please keep a respectful distance from wildlife.
-
Can I bring my own kayak or canoe? To prevent the introduction of invasive species, outside boats are not allowed.
-
Are there any hazards to keep in mind? We recommend sun protection (sunscreen or long sleeves and a hat) and insect repellent if you are bothered by biting insects (we have repellent wipes available). Additionally, we'll provide you with a PFD (life jacket) that must be worn and fastened at all times.
