Students, faculty, and staff are invited to this free weekly event series at Rice Creek Field Station from September 20 to Nov 1, excluding Oct 11 due to Fall Break.

How It Works

Board the Green Route Shuttle at 2, 2:30, or 3 pm from the MCC bus loop. 11 minutes later, you'll be dropped off at Rice Creek Field Station. Walk to the left past the front doors toward the water and the boat launch. You will see our staff there. Canoes and kayaks are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Our program leader will greet you, provide equipment, and get you set up in your kayak or canoe. You'll have your boat for half an hour, and can extend your time if no one is waiting.

FAQs

  • What if I've never kayaked or canoed before? No problem! We are happy to help you have a good first experience.
  • What should I wear? Wear shoes and clothes you don't mind getting a little wet.
  • Can I fish? Rice Creek is a nature preserve – hunting and fish are not allowed. Thank you for respecting our policy.
  • Can I play music while kayaking or canoeing? To be respectful of wildlife and other people at Rice Creek, we ask that you avoid playing music. Please keep a respectful distance from wildlife.
  • Can I bring my own kayak or canoe? To prevent the introduction of invasive species, outside boats are not allowed.
  • Are there any hazards to keep in mind? We recommend sun protection (sunscreen or long sleeves and a hat) and insect repellent if you are bothered by biting insects (we have repellent wipes available). Additionally, we'll provide you with a PFD (life jacket) that must be worn and fastened at all times.
  • How do I get back from Rice Creek? The Green Route Shuttle will return to Marano Campus Center at 3:11, 3:41, and 4:11 pm.
  • What if I have another question? Please reach out to us at rcfs@oswego.edu.
  • What if I need accommodations? Persons with disabilities requiring accommodations to attend this event should reach out the ajones26@oswego.edu in advance.
