The Department of English and Creative Writing has brought hundreds of writers into the community, from Nobel, Pulitzer and Emmy winners to new voices. Organizers believe words matter. Waves of change can start small, with a word. All events are open to campus and community.

Beloved SUNY Oswego creative writing professor Robert O’Connor earned his undergraduate degree at SUNY Oswego before receiving a graduate degree from Syracuse University. O’Connor authored the novel "Buffalo Soldiers"—which was adapted into a film starring Joaquin Phoenix, Anna Paquin, Ed Harris and Scott Glenn—and other works, and has earned recognition from Granta and many other literary entities. Novelist James Carroll praised O'Connor in a positive review in The New York Times, while The Independent has called his writing "powerful."
