The Department of Anthropology Invited Speaker Series features Adrian Chase, Ph.D. candidate in the School of Human Evolution and Social Change, Arizona State University.

Unlike modern cities today, the ancient Maya constructed “garden cities” composed of landscapes with mixed agricultural fields, kitchen gardens, and rainwater reservoirs integrated with their residential groups and civic architecture. This talk focuses on boundaries at multiple scales within the ancient Maya city of Caracol in modern Belize using data from nearly 40 years of research by the Caracol ArchaeologicalProject (www.caracol.org). Given its longevity, cities such as Caracol can help inspire new ideas about modern sustainable urban practices.
