McGill was born in small-town Ontario and grew up there. A former Rhodes Scholar and Junior Fellow with the Harvard Society of Fellows, he is the author of two novels, "They Mysteries" and "Once We Had A Country," as well as two non-fiction books, "War Is Here," which exams the Vietnam War’s influence on Canadian literature, and "Treacherous Imagination," which considers the ethics of authors writing fiction based on their loved ones’ lives. He directs the Creative Writing MA program at University of Toronto. Part of SUNY Oswego's Living Writers Series.
