Grand Slam Date: TBD

Enjoy a poetry slam at Lake Effect Café. What is a poetry slam? A poetry slam is a competition where poets are judged by select members of the audience. Poetry slams are loud, vibrant events where audience members are encouraged to interact with the performance.

Rules for qualifying for the Grand Slam:

1. Poets must earn a minimum of four points to compete in the grand slam in the spring semester.

2. Poets earn points by competing in slam.

Point breakdown

1st Place: 4 points2nd Place: 3 points3rd Place: 2 pointParticipation: 1 point
3. Anyone who earns points may still be eligible to compete in the grand slam.

4. Grand Slam will have a maximum of 10 competitors.

Rules for Slam:

1. Poets must perform original work.

2. No props or costumes.

3. Poems must be completed within the time limit. The time limit for this slam is 3 minutes with a grace period of 10 seconds. Poets will be penalized 0.5 points for every 10 seconds they go over the limit.

4. Poems may not include any racist, sexist, homophobic or transphobic language.

5. Memorization is not required.

6. Poets must be students.

The slam will have two rounds. In the event of a tie, poets will read a third additional poem.

All students (grads and undergrads) are encouraged to come get help from a Penfield librarian in this relaxed, collaborative space. Whether you need assistance conducting research, finding scholarly sources or formatting your citations, Penfield's librarians have you covered. Writing Center tutors will also be there to assist you with your writing questions.

Free pizza and snacks will be provided. No registration necessary. Drop in and join the party.
